Description:

One of the outcomes of the UN-organised World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was the establishment of a new forum for multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on Internet governance issues. The first Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will be convened in Athens from the 30th October to the 2nd November 2006 with the overall theme of 'Internet Governance for Development' and will be organised around the topics of openness, security, diversity and access. This OII event aims to provide a general overview of the IGF and insight into the issues it plans to address.

The discussion covers questions such as: What are the overarching goals for the IGF in its five-year lifespan? What are the priority issues for the IGF and why? How can people participate, and why should they?

This event is organised by the Oxford Internet Institute in collaboration with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School and the e-Horizons Institute at the James Martin 21st Century School, with input from the Net Dialogue project. The organisers are grateful for sponsorship from Nominet UK, Afilias and the Internet Society (ISOC).
